Ok, so I lied. The living in a craft/art/retail world is NEVER easy. Constant ideas, constant marketing, constant tinkering…the brain never seems to want to stop (unlike the cash funds that seem to NEVER want to keep going)

AAAAnnyyhooos…as we move full tilt boogie into the summer we have scads of new goodies coming into the shop. A new look is developing. A new feel is settling in. We are groovin’ to a new vibe, my friends! We are also pulling back and refocusing on our initial focus of recycled and upcycled. What do you think about the new logo?

Feel like a little road trip? This Saturday, July 2nd, look for our stand at Carlisle’s Summerfest on the Dickinson campus 8-3pm. Say hi to Tara and our HoPo volunteers! Of course the shop will also be open 11-5 right here in Midtown for your shopping pleasure! We know you will have a bunch of guests, so we FULLY expect you to show them YOUR favorite place for uniquely functional art, y’hear?

SPEAKING of Midtown, I just got word today that Friends of Midtown is doing a Fire Hydrant painting contest “Paint the Plug” Check out the goodies so you can submit your design for consideration! Looks like some nice CASH prizes are up for grabs! The submissions must be in by July 15th and after selection, the artists will have a month to “Paint the Plug” Submit to Susquehanna Art Museum PO Box 11818, Harrisburg PA, 17108 and more info is available by emailing beautification@friendsofmidtown.org

April begins next week and with it the final three weeks of events to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! Many thanks to all who have donated on line, come out for Kegs ‘n’ Eggs and the Mantis Gallery’s FivebySeven show!

This weekend, my amazing boyfriend Michael and I will be busy making chocolate covered Easter Eggs! Get your order in NOW by hopping over to this form! We’re planning on making 250 this weekend, and by the end of the campaign we hope to have sold 500! We’ll be stirring and forming and dipping away all day Sunday..the foils are due today! I know you didn’t know it, but MDG makes some KILLER Easter Eggs! Ask his co-workers! He supplies them with dozens every year. This year tho, they’re gonna PAY! What sweeter way to donate to a worthy cause, right?

Have you made your appointment yet for The Ink-a-thon? Check out the events page for details on the participating studios both at the Maennerchor 2-10pm April 3rd and some at their locations on both Saturday and Sunday! Show some tattoo love, yo! DJ Chris Vroman of Cashmere entertainment will be spinning some mad tunes, Lisa will be laying out some Tarot, and Jan will be sketching your pets (from photos, please) There will be food available and a cash bar as well as some nifty neat art and stuff for sale.

Then at 3 register for the Poetry Slam at ABC on Cameron from 3:30 t0 6:30. During the SLAM items will be out for the Silent Auction leading into BLUEGRASS with Ragtime Willi from 7-9pm. Event door is $5.

April 17th is the FIRST EVER Bacon ‘n’ Brew Ha-Ha at ABC up in the Abbey Bar and The Gallery. Sign up now to enter your favorite bacon dish or home brewed beer, cider or rootbeer! Seriously! Join us for some crazy cool fundraisers to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! Dawn is up for Woman of the Year and every penny we raise counts as a vote! The heck with settling for Central PA’s Woman of the Year…The HodgePodgery is shooting for NATIONAL!!

Our very first event is for you graphically inclined souls. Chatterbox Marketing is doing a t-shirt contest entries should be in by Friday March 4th, the top 5 designs chosen March 7th which will be available to order. Grand Prize winner is determined by sales totals as of Thurs MARCH 31st. Proceeds from t-shirt sales/votes benefit LLS.

ENTRIES are now being accepted for The Mantis Gallery’s FIVEbySEVEN event to benefit LLS. Entries must be received by SatMarch 12th. The exhibit begins with an Opening Reception 8-10 pm Fri MARCH 18th (3rd in the Burg) and closes Sun March 27th.

Area chefs will be doing the judging. Not only will we honor bacon and all it’s glory, but we will also be honoring BEER! Yessireeee! Home brewers are invited to enter a Sixtel or six pack of HOME BREWED Beer, hard cider or rootbeer. The Proposal #HoPoLanCo

Heads up faithful followers. Today, we put a proposal in for a spot in Lancaster for a second location. We will keep you posted. The space is in a unique building, with some rather interesting things in store. Keep your fingers crossed that they want us to be part. So much potential, and you KNOW we believe in potential! We have a lot of work to do to get things in motion as soon as we have the YAY. It is on the 400 block of North Queen St, so as always we are right on the edge, expanding boundaries. The vibes are really good. It is an interesting situation, but we KNOW we can count on you to help make it the place to be! Watch for more news, right here!

The HoPo Road Show takes a Hiatus

I know it’s only been a few short months, and we were getting decent interest, however, as in many cases City Government has quashed the fun. Due to city requirements that ALL VENDORS large and small, must have a Mercantile license, Vendor License and zoning permit if they intend to participate in TWO or more events within the city, we must take a break from trying to bring something fun and exciting to Midtown’s Broad Street Market. Many of the crafters and artists who wanted to participate have found it intimidating to fill out the various forms for the licensing. Although the $110 or so a year is not a huge amount, if you are are a crafter and are doing shows in a variety of places each year, added to the table fees, you could be putting out more than you bring in. We, of course can pay a general fee for “transient vendors” if they are only doing a single show in the city of Harrisburg within a calendar year. For us, we would want our vendors to come back again and again. Although the city did offer to give us a break on the monthly transient licenses, it still required each individual vendor to jump through the hoops and paperwork. The interest in participating in a new venue that could not promise a huge turn out and having to lay out $110 to the city for the privilege of doing business within it’s boundaries, discouraged many a potential participant.

Thanks to all who gave it a try and thanks to all who helped promote! Watch for The HoPo Road Show in it’s original form to be doing outside events in 2011.
