Anxiously Waiting

2010 July 22
by Jessica

Never-ending things happening at The HodgePodgery!

Many of you have noticed a reduced calendar for August.  We are trying to be calm, cool and collected as we wait for the the birth of Baby Boy Canzoneri. Jessica is ready for this pregnancy thing to be done and over with and the REAL fun to begin!  She is looking forward to meeting this little rascal who has given her a run for the money over the past 8 months.  Soooo, long story short, we are keeping the schedule light so Mama and First Time Grandma can make a mad dash to the hospital if need be!

In OTHER news, It’s nice to report that 3rd in the Burg has been a success here in Harrisburg, especially in our wonderful Midtown, which is in and of itself a mixed media of sorts!  Great things continue to happen, new artists are featured around the city, fun demos, make and takes, openings, performances and such continue to draw crowds and with the HoPo Road Show Art and Craft Market starting at the Broad Street Market at noon on 3rd in the Burg extending into Saturday, we hope to see even more participants and families as we extend hours.

August 20th’s 3rd in the Burg brings you face to face with Deb Hatfield of Pawprint Candles… those amazing soy pet candles everyone keeps coming back for! You will be able to create your own scent to pour over colored pieces.  $4 for a 4 oz YOU MADE IT candle! The shop will be open 11-10 that day, and the candle making will be 5-8.

In print…we hope you’ve picked up your July/Aug edition of Susquehanna Style Magazine!!   If not… you can check it out HERE pg 61 has cupcakes from Knit Yeah, cuffs by B B Bellezza, bags by Tara Chickey and Leah Felicity as well as other goodies in the background and a goofy pick of your favorite recycled/repurposed/handmade shop owners!  Speaking of magazines and stories you see…PLEASE contact the publishers and THANK them for doing such a great job and finding positive things to focus their work on!  Keep a look out for September’s (?) issue of the 717 magazine from Harrisburg Magazine as well!

We have quite a few names in the till so far for the new HoPo Lotto,  this period’s featured artist is Anela Bence-Selkowitz of ScrapPigeon. Check out her bio on the HoPo Lotto page. Beautifully funky feathered and naturals inspired jewelry and stunning photography.

We still find it difficult to believe that we’ve been doing this a full year!  We are at consignor number 0201, with over 170 active creators consigning their wares here.  Many thanks and blessings to all of our HoPo supporters!

Peace, Love, HoPo-mania!!

The HoPoRoadShow, A Monthly Art and Craft Market

2010 June 30
by Jessica

The HodgePodgery introduces a monthly market dedicated to all things art and craft.  The “HoPoRoadShow” will be held monthly on 3rd in the Burg Fridays and Saturdays beginning July 16 &17 in cooperation with The Historic Harrisburg Association. Friday hours are noon til 7 and Saturdays 8-4.
The market will surround the outside of the Historic Broad Street Market, the country’s oldest continuously running market, and during cold or rainy weather, inside the Historic Harrisburg Association building on 3rd and Verbeke Streets in Midtown Harrisburg. Both venues are two blocks uptown from the Hopo. This will be year round, rain or shine specialty market with the 2 venues accommodating accordingly.
The HoPoRoadShow is for vendors selling Art and Handmade Wares, as well as supplies such as hand dyed yarn, vintage fabrics and buttons, glass beads, and other items used in the creative processes.  This is NOT a flea market and mass produced manufactured “junk” is not permitted.  However, gently used art products and supplies are more than welcome.
The Art and Craft Market is a venue for performance art as well. Actors, stilt walkers, jugglers, and illusionists, vaudevillians, singers, songwriters, performers of all types may peddle their services. Don’t forget business cards and flyers for upcoming events!! Think of the variety of street performers you’ve enjoyed throughout your lives in such places as Inner Harbor, Key West and New Orleans.
Interested Artists, Crafters, and Entertainers: We are extending a one time offer for “free space” to be used at any HoPoRoadShow in the future for those who participate in the VERY FIRST OFFICIAL EVENT!  The free space will be the same value as the one you reserve for July. Tables start at $25. They are permanent fixtures approx 6 feet long, that drop from poles. They are in groups of four similar to :  =l= =l=   There are two “center” and two “outer” in each 4 table section. There are 56 “individual” tables which make up 14 “4 table sections” surrounding the two BSM buildings. Centers are $25, outers are $30 with a $5 discount per 2nd, 3rd and 4th consecutive table reserved. There is also space between the market buildings where I am picturing the “entertainment” oriented vendors to be.
Everyone interested in participating as a vendor should contact me directly. dawn@thehodgepodgery.com
Art and Craft Enthusiasts: Tell EVERYONE about the new market place!  We want to get as many people as possible in to Harrisburg to see what we have to offer.  The food vendors in Broad Street Market will be OPEN. There are a variety of ethnic foods as well as our PA traditional foods. There will be live music and entertainment all day long if I have my way (and the entertainers take advantage of this opportunity!) It will be a great way to extend 3rd in the Burg! Thanks so much and I look forward to your feedback!!

Peace, Love and Forever HoPo!

First Annual Harrisburg Book Festival and Midtown Artsfest June 26 and 27

2010 June 15
by Jessica

New Chapter for Midtown:
1st Annual Book, Artsfest
The Burg Magazine (June 2010)

Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27th from 9-5 in front of Midtown Scholar on 3rd and Verbeke!

Do you love books? Then picture this:
Books as far as the eye can see. Books about politics. Books about sports. Books about cooking, history. Memoirs, novels, whatever. It’s a book lover’s fantasy, yet it’s that rare fantasy that’s about to come true.

On June 26–27, the 1st Annual Harrisburg Book Festival and Midtown Artsfest will set up its tent on the grassy lot at 3rd and Verbeke streets, just across from the Broad Street Market. But you say you’re not so much into books? Then how about crafts? The arts? Then picture the planning stage as a big book fair has mushroomed into a street celebration of the arts district that Midtown has become. “It’s a huge celebration of the arts, as well as a celebration of the community,” said festival organizer Eric Papenfuse, owner of Midtown Scholar Bookstore-Cafe Outdoors, 10,000 to 20,000 books will be for sale, each priced at under $2. And these aren’t used books. They’re new, from Midtown Scholar’s own warehouse stock.

Dawn Rettinger, co-owner of the HodgePodgery, is drumming up more than two dozen of her shop’s consignors, who will show and sell their wares.

“This is the perfect way to highlight the talent that we have here in Harrisburg,” said Rettinger. Inside Midtown Scholar, another component of the festival will take place. Dozens of local authors will hold forth with readings, lectures and signings. In addition, several academics will discuss topics related to writing, the arts and culture. The big keynote is slated for the night of June 26, when author and teacher Jackson Taylor will speak on the role of writers in our society. Taylor, a Harrisburg native and associate director of the graduate writing program at The New School in New York City, is author of “The Blue Orchard,” a just-published novel set in Harrisburg. “There is a hunger in the community for an event like this,” said Papenfuse. “It’s a celebration of books and the arts and of crafts and of Midtown.”

Biography

“I am 17 and a Senior at Hershey High School. I will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall to pursue a combined major in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I have a passion for artwork and have been inspired by henna and my culture. The typical henna designs that are prevalent at weddings and special functions have been combined with modern ones to create unique patterns. I have been doing henna since I was very young, and although it began as a mere pass-time, it has transformed into a real passion. These same designs can be found on various pieces of stationary and products. Each design is a one-of-a-kind as I hand-draw each of them. These original pieces can be purchased at the HoPo, but can also be specially ordered for any type of occasion. I would be more than happy to personalize your order with your choice of colors, designs, and writings. I hope that you come out and join me for a day of henna!”
